Colour is decided before the cloth is woven, not after. We dye yarn in-lot rather than piece-dyeing finished fabric, which means every thread going onto the loom is already the exact shade it needs to be. This is a slower way to work, but it produces a more even, more durable colour than dyeing a finished bolt of cloth.
Yarn-dyeing has a practical advantage too: because the colour runs all the way through each individual thread, it doesn't sit only on the surface. Surface-dyed cloth tends to fade unevenly at stress points — the knees, the seat, the fold of a cuff — because that's where the outer layer of colour wears off first. Dyed yarn ages more gracefully, because there's colour all the way through the fibre, not just on top of it.
We work with a limited, considered colour range for each drop rather than offering every shade at once. Partly this is a supply chain reality — small-batch dyeing to match a specific tone takes real coordination with the mill — and partly it's a design choice. A tighter palette, chosen well, is more useful to build a wardrobe around than an unlimited one.
Getting a colour right on cotton is also a matter of patience. Cotton doesn't take dye as readily as some other fibres, and the same recipe can shift slightly depending on humidity, water quality, and the exact batch of yarn. Every dye lot gets checked against a reference swatch before it's approved to move forward to weaving — if it's off, it gets redone.
By the time a spool of dyed yarn reaches the loom, its colour is already final. Nothing at the finishing stage is used to fix or alter it. What you see in a SLOOM trouser is the colour of the yarn itself.
